Lantern Festival
● 元宵节，也叫“灯节”。在中国古代，元宵节是全民狂欢的节日。这一天，处处张灯结彩、喜气洋洋，男女老少都会出门参加灯会、游街赏灯。这一习俗历经千年，一直流传至今。
Also known as the “Lantern Festival”, the Yuanxiao Festival has been an occasion of popular celebration in ancient China. On this day, lanterns are festooned everywhere to add to the festive atmosphere. Men and women of all ages go outdoors to attend the lantern fair and parade through the streets to appreciate the scene. This custom has been observed for thousands of years.
● 而今天，在有着“中国灯城”之称的四川自贡，灯会已经成为当地最著名的文化品牌之一。2022年，在第28届自贡国际恐龙灯会上，一组组五彩斑斓的玉宇琼楼、飞天神兽，璀璨了这座“千年盐都”“恐龙之乡”的夜晚。
Today, in Zigong, the famed “city of lanterns” located in Sichuan, the lantern fair has become a most famous local cultural event. In 2022, at the 28th Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival, a plethora of lanterns fashioned after fairy tales and mythical beasts illuminated the nocturnal skyline of this “Millennium Salt Capital” and “Hometown of Dinosaurs”.

A Sumptuous Feast for the Eyes
自贡灯会题材丰富、取材广泛，古今中外，无有不包。灯会汇集诗、文、书、画、雕刻、剪纸、竹编等多种艺术形式，同时与园林景观相结合，是一个包罗万象、内涵丰富、主题多元的大型灯会。
The Zigong Lantern Festival is based on a rich array of subject matters over a wide range, including ancient and modern ones, as well as Chinese and foreign ones. It brings together poetry, literature, calligraphy, painting, sculpture, paper-cutting, bamboo weaving and various other art forms, integrating with the garden landscape. It is a kaleidoscopic event featuring rich symbolism and diverse subjects.
在这场流光溢彩的视觉盛宴中，东方奇幻和赛博朋克同在、传统文化和现代科技交融，可谓美轮美奂、令人着迷。
In this splendid visual feast, the interchange of oriental fantasy and cyberpunk and the blending of traditional culture and modern technology stage various scenes of dazzling fascination.

自贡灯会由传统民间灯会演变而来，最早始于唐宋年间。自贡地区历史上的彩灯是以工艺灯为主的单个、小型、静态的彩灯，用材多为竹、木、纸、绸、绢一类，制作工艺主要是笊扎和裱糊。
The Zigong Lantern Festival evolved from the traditional folk lantern fair, which first began in the Tang and Song dynasties (AD 618—1279). Historically, the colored lanterns in Zigong were stand-alone, small and static units based on craft lamps and mostly made of bamboo, wood, paper and silk via weaving and plastering.

现阶段，自贡彩灯进一步发展，制作材料延伸到塑胶、钢筋、玻璃纸、亚克力等现代材料，融汇剪纸、皮影、扎染、刺绣、雕刻等传统技艺，与现代光电技术结合，融“形、色、声、光、动”于一体，以大型组灯的形式呈现。
Now, the Zigong lanterns have witnessed further development, and modern materials such as plastics, steel bars, cellophane and acrylic are used in their production. Meanwhile, paper-cutting, shadow play, tie-dyeing, embroidery, carving and other traditional techniques are combined with modern optoelectronic technology, to produce large-scale group lanterns integrating “pattern design, color arrangement, sound effects, lighting, and motion features”.
大型组灯的制作是一个非常庞大而细致的系统工程。其诞生需要美工、电工、裱糊工、焊工、机械传动师等互相配合，采用裱糊、焊接、捆扎等多种传统技艺及现代光影、激光成像、5G应用等现代科技方可完成。
The production of large group lanterns is an immense, meticulous, and systematic undertaking. It requires the cooperation of artists, electricians, pasting workers, welders, mechanical transmission engineers, and the use of traditional techniques such as pasting, welding, and bundling, as well as modern technologies such as modern light and shade effects, laser imaging, and 5G.

1987年，第一届自贡国际恐龙灯会成功举办。之后陆续到上海、广州、武汉、拉萨、乌鲁木齐、沈阳、昆明、香港、台湾、澳门等多地展出。
In 1987, the first Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival was held. After that, it was exhibited in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Lhasa, Urumqi, Shenyang, Kunming, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau and other places.

The First Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival
1990年，“中国自贡灯会”首次跨出国门在新加坡举办，时任新加坡总统黄金辉及夫人主持亮灯仪式。
In 1990, the “China Zigong Lantern Festival” was held in Singapore, with a light-up ceremony hosted by then Singaporean President Wee Kim Wee and his wife. It was the first time for the event to be held abroad.
之后，自贡灯会又相继在美国、英国、荷兰、澳大利亚、加拿大、俄罗斯等多个国家展出。如今，自贡灯会已先后在全球40多个国家和地区展出。多国政要都曾对自贡灯会给予高度评价，把自贡灯会誉为“天下第一灯”。
After that, Zigong Lantern Festival was exhibited in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, and Russia and more. So far, it has been exhibited in more than 40 countries and regions around the world, and highly praised as the “No. 1 Lantern Fair in the World.”

2021年末至2022年初，在法国布拉尼亚克市，同样由自贡灯匠打造的45组彩灯点亮里图雷特公园。
From the end of 2021 to the beginning of 2022, 45 sets of lanterns created by lantern artisans of Zigong lit up the Rituret Park in Blagnac, France.

同时，四川自贡还和法国自然博物馆合作，在巴黎举办了《穿越时空 六亿年的进化之旅》灯会展览。
Meanwhile, Zigong also staged the lantern show “A Journey Through Time and Space: 600 Million Years of Evolution” in Paris, via cooperation with the French National Museum of Natural History.

今天我们看到的自贡灯会和彩灯，其背后既是无数彩灯人的奇思妙想和扎实技艺，也是千年传承、现代技术、国际视野的完美融合。自贡灯会用其独特的浪漫和美感，让传统文化在新时代焕发出别样的风貌，并铺就一条“彩灯之路”，点亮全球各地。
The Zigong Lantern Festival and the lanterns we see today are not only underpinned by the ingenuity and solid skills of countless lantern artisans, but also reflective of the integration of time-honored legacy, modern technologies and international vision. With its unique romance and beauty, the Zigong Lantern Festival has given traditional Chinese culture a distinct charm in the new era, and carved out “a lantern path” inspiring the entire world.
